Google Science Fair

It's your turn to change the world

Google Science Fair is an international, online science and technology competition that encourages students between the ages of 13 to 18 to be curious, ask questions, and perform science experiments to answer those questions. In partnership with CERN, The Lego Group, National Geographic, and Scientific American, Google invites these students to post their science projects online so that they may compete for prizes, scholarships, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Google Science Fair 2013 launched on January 30. The project deadline for the competition is April 30, and the finalists/Science in Action Award will be announced in June.

About 5 weeks ago Lake Hillier is located in Western Australia. The pink color of the lake is permanent, and does not change when taken out of the lake. It is still unknown why the water is pink. Some researchers suggest that it is due to organisms living in the salt crust deposits surrounding the lake. Despite the unusual color, the lake exhibits no known adverse effects upon humans. https://www.googlesciencefair.com/

About 5 weeks ago Lake Baikal is located in Siberia. It is the oldest and deepest lake on Earth. It contains around 20% of the world's fresh water. In March, these beautiful turquoise masses of broken ice appear on its surface. These are caused by the unequal structure, temperature, and pressure in the main body of the packed ice. https://www.googlesciencefair.com/

About 4 weeks ago This creature is called Glaucus atlanticus. It is an extremely dangerous, camouflaged sea slug. It preys on venomous animals like the Portuguese Man-Of-War. The slug consumes the entire organism and stores only the most venomous nematocysts for its own use. The venom is then concentrated, which produces a more powerful venom than that of the Man-Of-War jellyfish it feeds on. Glaucus atlanticus is also a hermaphrodite, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs... A truly unbelievable animal. https://www.googlesciencefair.com/

About 1 week ago Lost city is lost no more

It was called Thonis by ancient Egyptians, and Heracleion by ancient Greeks. An important port city to both cultures, it was mentioned in history books, but for centuries its whereabouts have been unknown - until now. The team of French marine archaeologist Dr. Frank Goddio recently discovered numerous ruins four miles off the Egyptian coast: Here's a picture of a massive statue being raised from the ocean floor.

About 1 day ago The Waitomo glow caves in New Zealand are filled with glowworms called Arachnocampia luminosa. These glowworms dwell in caves, grottos and deep in forests. The glow you see is a result of a chemical reaction which occurs in excretory organs in the worm's abdomen.
