Science on Google+: A Public Database

The primary goal of this page/database is to make it easier for people to connect with scientists, science journalists, science teachers (K-12), and science pages on Google+.

How do I use this database to follow science on Google+?
You can search for and follow scientists, science writers, science teachers, and science pages in two ways. First, the database is categorized by discipline. You can click on the links at the top of the spreadsheet or the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet to search within a discipline. You can circle individual profiles/pages by clicking on the Google+ links. Or second, you can add discipline specific shared circles. We will publish updated shared circles at regular intervals for your convenience.

About 9 weeks ago I See the World with Science! Image Competition

It's time again to play #ISeeTheWorldWithScience !
Science is all around and sometimes it lets us see things that aren't obvious at first.

This image was taken by +Guillermo Abramson of this week's fantastic comet PANSTARRS. But I bet you can see a lot else going on with all that science knowledge you have...

What do you see in this image? Provide a creative and sciency description of something going on in this image or related to it and suggest a caption.
One caption will be selected as winner judged by science content and the number of +1 votes. You have 48 hours. (If you are seeing this as a reshare please try to use the original post so the comments are mostly in one place, it's more fun that way.)

See the first #iseetheworldwithscience  competition for ideas of what we're looking for and for some great discussion in the comments.

Cute Llama...or is an Alpaca? What's the difference again? And those mountains are they fold or block mountains? Does erosion play a large factor? And so much green, how do plants hold on to enough water in such steep slopes, and why are they different shades of green anyways?

Welcome to round 3 of   #iseetheworldwithscience !

Round 2 was a photo of the PANSTARRS coment and was won by +Oliver Binetti  who pointed out the difference in colour ranges our eyes and photo film can absorb compared to digital photos. (https://plus.google.com/b/105917944266111687812/105917944266111687812/posts/DtVpRHinGFb)

How much more can we see in this picture with your knowledge of science?
If you see something, add a one sentence description in the comments. It should be short, clear and very sciency.

The more creative, surprising or unexpected the better. But it needs to be something based on actual science.

About 8 weeks ago It's time to wrap up round 3 of #iseetheworldwithscience.
Great discusion everyone!

First of all, as +Bonnie Montleon pointed out, this is a Llama.

But the discussion about what else you could see with science in this photo ranged from the water cycle, to canyons cut by water and the history of animal domestication.

But the top votes were tied between +Matthew Padilla and +Rajini Rao.
+Matthew Padilla informed us about plants that get most of their water from suspended water vapor condensing on them rather than rain.
+Rajini Rao pointed out that Llama's are ungulates which are related to cetaceans (whales) which led to a great and long discussion about these seemingly unrelated branches of the evolutionary tree.

Hope you enjoyed it.

See you next time for #ISeeTheWorldWithScience, image suggestions welcome.
