About 8 weeks ago This Can’t Be a Good Photo, Because…

…I’ve read enough from people in forums on the Web who have convinced me there is no way this could be a good shot because….

(a) It was taken with a 6-megapixel consumer camera (the original Canon Digital Rebel) back in 2006
(b) I shot it with the cheap kit lens that came with the camera
(c) My camera was set to JPEG mode
(d) It was taken on a $14.95 tripod (I forgot mine at home so I had to buy one at Walmart)

I’m going back there again soon on a family vacation, but this time I’m taking:

(a) A Nikon D800 36-megapixel camera or my Nikon D4
(b) A 14-24mm f/2.8 lens that along costs more than the camera, lens, and tripod I shot the image above with combined.
(c) I’ll shoot in RAW mode and post-process the image in Lightroom 4
(d) I’ll be using an Gitzo Carbon-fiber tripod with a Really Right Stuff BH-40 ball-head and I’ll have a cable release this time
But with all that cool gear and technology,

About 3 weeks ago Sometimes you just get lucky

We landed in Paris and began our four-hour drive to Mont San Michel in the pouring rain. It rained non-stop all the way there, and when we got out of our car in the parking lot (25-minutes walk away), it was still drizzling, but then.....the clouds cleared, the rain stopped, and the sky became much more beautiful than you see here (and we shot for more than three hours). There's a name for this. Total luck! :-)

About 3 weeks ago One from yesterday’s bridal shoot

I shot this yesterday for a project I’m working on. It was taken at a small church in downtown Tampa, and it’s lit with just one flash with a small 27″ soft box. 1/80 of a second (I chose a slower shutter speed so you can see more of the available light in the church), and f/4 (I chose a wider aperture than I would in the studio so the background would be out of focus). You’ll see a lot more from this project, soon! :)

About 5 days ago The most useful button in Lightroom?

Great video clip from my buddy +Matt Kloskowski on what he thinks may well be the most useful button in Lightroom (he originally ran this over on LightroomKillerTips.com last week). I can’t say I disagree, because I use it literally every single day dozens of times (if not more). If it’s not “the” most useful button, it’s surely is among the very top!

About 6 weeks ago I’m Back From Spring Break Vacation

We cashed in a bunch of Frequent Flier Miles (I had quite a few) and we snuck away with the kid’s to Maui for Spring Break (where I got the shot you see below — thanks to our friend +Randy Jay Braun for the location). We had a ball (and believe it or not, I still have FF miles left), but now I’m back in the saddle at back at work taping some videos before my flight to Philly later today. It’s all I can do to keep from crying. LOL! ;-)

Our trip started out with….well….it started in a very un-expected way. So much so, my wife wrote about the “experience” over on her page. Here’s the link: http://bit.ly/ZxNXpB (don’t say I didn’t warn ya).

About 10 weeks ago Shooting F/A-18s Down at Key West Naval Air Station

Just got back last night from spending a couple of days with my buddy, aviation photographer Jose Ramos, at Key West Naval Air Station. I'll have the whole story and more photos tomorrow on my blog, but in the meantime here's one of my favorites, taken just after sunset. Cheers, -Scott

About 13 weeks ago Shooting exotic cars at the duPont Registry magazine's headquarters

Today over on my blog, I have the images, along with behind-the-scenes shots (including one for the shot you see below) from my shoot yesterday over the duPont Registry. They have some amazing cars! (I shot the Ferarri F-430 you see below, and a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Fisker Karma, and a classic Corvette Stingray). Here's the link if you've got a sec: http://bit.ly/XGdj67

About 7 weeks ago Here's one from my shoot yesterday at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

This is my fourth year shooting the Grand Prix (this was taken during warm-ups yesterday), but I found a low shooting position I really like and spent some time there getting every car and driver. This was taken with Nikon D4 using a 400mm f/2.8 lens at f/2.8 with a shutter speed of 1/4000 of a second at 200 ISO. More to come.
