About 13 weeks ago Technopanic

The phone rang last night as I was eating a late dinner. A BBC TV World News producer wanted me to be on a segment about Facebook being hacked. I spent time trying to talk her out of this nonstory. Some employee laptops fell victim to malware. It was fixed. No user data was compromised. But couldn't people's posts be made public? she protested. Well, I said, everything put on Facebook is intended to be shared with someone. This isn't like a bank being hacked. Where's the damage? Where's the story? You are engaging in a technopanic, I complained. Media does this too often, jumping on the latest problem to warn of the danger of this technology rather than doing enough stories on the wonders and opportunities of this new technology. Y'know what, I concluded, I don't want to be part of the segment. Oh, but wait, she said. She talked to her producers and called back to say they wanted me to say this. I'm going to say this is a nonstory and bad news judgment, I

About 8 weeks ago I didn't realize, until I visited the duty-free electronics store at New Delhi's airport, that the under-$100 smart phone had already arrived -- from Samsung, even.
Now, of course, it's not just the cost of the phone but more the cost of the access that's the issue in deployment to the next 3 billion internet users. And I heard much grumbling about telco/government corruption in India.
Still, I was amazed to find choice at the low-end.
The Samsung Champ New Duos, pictured below, is dual-SIM and has an FM radio and simple Samsung apps. It costs an incredible $59, unlocked and unsubsidized.
The Samsung Galaxy Y is an entry-level Android smartphone with Gingerbread. It costs $105.
The Samsung Galaxy Music Duos has Android 4, dual SIMs, and wi-fi hotspot for $147.
The screens are small -- all about 3" -- and not great quality. But nevermind. They connect their users to the net and the world.
The Indian government has all but given up on its ill-run, il

About 6 weeks ago Here's a very good Verge report on cops wearing on-body cameras. If cops ended up being the only ones who bought Segways, I wonder whether they'll be the biggest market for Google Glass.
The trend toward wearable cameras among officials will also mean that police will defend the notion that what happens in public is public. And it will mean that they can -- or rather, should -- have no complaint about being taped as public officials working in public.
