About 3 weeks ago [Long-exposure fireflies.]

So, so cool. More here:  http://bit.ly/1mvqy9e

I don't care how old I get. Fireflies will always be magical to me.

About 6 weeks ago [Feel-Good Friday: Elderly lady adopts stray. Inseparable friendship begins. Adorableness never ends.]

Three of the cutest things combine to create one mega-Voltron of cuteness: cats, old ladies, and Japanese culture: http://bit.ly/1k0weVl

"Misao lives a rural life outside the city in Japan. One day, she found a stray cat, took her in, and named him Fukumaru. They have been inseparable ever since, and the photos are beyond heart-warming."

About 3 weeks ago So much of what is wrong with the medical industry in just one telephone conversation:

Me: "Hi, I wanted to check on reimbursement for a procedure. I have the procedure name, medical billing code, radiology lab name I have an appointment with, and how much they bill in total for the procedure. The lab is in-network. I just need to know how much you will cover, and how much I am responsible for."

Health insurance company: "I'm sorry, we can't tell you the pricing until after it is already billed."

Me: "What? You can't tell me how much it will cost?"

HIC: "No. Not until they submit the claim."

Me: "But...I have everything you need to know. I can give you the exact billing code they will submit. I already talked to them."

HIC: "But we don't know what they will submit it as until they submit the claim. For example, what the diagnosis is, the--"

Me: "What? Ho

About 12 weeks ago In the words of +Natalie Villalobos, "All growns up."

World, you've been put on notice. I'm comin' to getchaaaaa. (Full version here: http://bit.ly/1jLg7KD. Posting because I feel terrible that Google had to crop Daniel D'Ottavio's artistic composition, and I would hate for his work to be misrepresented!)

About 11 weeks ago IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: As threatened, ( <wink>) I'm taking a break from all social media (other than the professional accounts I manage) for the entire month of February.

It's part of several 30-day goals I'm tackling for 2014 (see: http://bit.ly/1ii5oHg). I love the idea of doing mini-new-year-resolutions as a sort of experiment (less pressure) rather than trying to make one drastic change for the entire year, or longer. As this TED talk points out (http://bit.ly/1aO0WQZ), some of them are likely to stick anyway. ;)

Just wanted to give a heads up, since I know many people rely on social media for direct contact. So don't be miffed or alarmed if I don't respond to tags or messages. I'm just not checking. :)

Hope you all have a lovely Valentine's Day, President's Day, Groundhog's Day, Black History Month, and everything else in between.

Oh, and happy birthday to my mom on February 6th. (Yes, I'll still be calling

About 6 weeks ago [Mini-Memoirs: I wanted teardrops on my chest, not my pillow.]

I stood in the shower and prepared myself for my regular ritual, angling my body to face the sunlight in slight parallel, illuminating the silhouette of my pubescent figure against the plastic wall. I lightly pressed my index finger into the middle of my burgeoning breasts, forcing them into the perfect, perky circle I knew my anatomy was supposed to mimic. I stood for a moment, shifting side to side with my head tilted down, admiring the rounded figure that magazines and movies told me most other women had. But knowing my non-invasive alteration was transient, I released my finger with a defeated sigh, my breasts and spirits dropping in tandem.

Later that year I would repeat this routine while standing in my mother's living room in my new boy-short bikini, tears gushing from my eyes, wetting my bathing suit for the first time. "They're pointy and floppy!" I gasped through sobs, gesturing to my chest that h
