Welcome to my Google+ page. I'm David Hobby, a recovering 20+ year newspaper photojournalist (Baltimore Sun, Maryland, USA) and the publisher of Strobist, a blog dedicated to teaching photographers how to light.
On G+ I hope to share a steady diet of (mostly) photo-oriented stuff, and would love to hear your comments and shares, too.

Thanks for stopping by. If you get a moment, please give me a shout out in a comment and let me know where you are from!

About 4 weeks ago Spent much of the day today trying to capture our resident Eastern Bluebird as he flew past my remote camera and flashes. It was a low-odds learning experience, but I think I have some better strategies for tomorrow.

About 7 weeks ago Each evening for the last four nights, this has been my view as I exit the apartment we rented in Old San Juan and head down Calle de Cruz toward Plaza de Armas, two blocks away. I can't believe it took me 48 years to get to Puerto Rico.

We'll be back, eager to discover what else Puerto Rico has to offer. But tomorrow we turn it down a notch (or several) and head to the sleepy Island of Vieques, eight miles off the southwest coast of the main island.

If you decide to come to Old San Juan (and you totally should) you could do far worse than to stay in the apartment of Raquel and Ralph Agosto. They are wonderful hosts and their apartment (in a 200 year old building) is ideal if you want to experience OSJ as a local. It has two bedrooms (queen plus double twins) bath, full kitchen, wifi, etc. Everything you need in a perfect location for less than the price of a typical meh double-double hotel room.

No financial connection at all, just a hearty recommendation. Ralph and R

About 10 weeks ago Today Google announced that is is killing their RSS reader, Google Reader. As it is for millions of other users, Google Reader is a mission critical part of my day.

Google, I know you want to migrate us to G+. I get that. But your unceremonious axing of something so much loved and used as Reader makes me question my dependency on ANY Google product other than search.

Please reshare this if you agree. Maybe someone at Google will notice.

About 5 weeks ago Home from Cuba

Just back from an amazing week in a surreal country with perhaps the most interesting group of fellow travelers I have ever had the pleasure of hanging out with. Not sure which of the three I am going to miss most.

Only took my Fuji X100s, and was so glad I made that call. Traveling light, with just one focal length, proved far more freeing than limiting. Here's my favorite photo I took from the week; more to come after I catch up with the family and triage the to-do list.

About 4 weeks ago Added more flashes (and a backdrop) to my outdoor bluebird studio today. Still can't quite freeze him in daylight.

But the bluebird and I have come to somewhat of an understanding after two days of shooting: I don't nuke him every time he comes home with dinner for the family, and he doesn't dive bomb my head when I go to the remote camera to check focus or swap a card...
