About 5 weeks ago Sea Robin

The Sea Robin, or gurnard get its name from the large pectoral fins, which open and close like a bird's wings in flight. The fish actually lives at the bottom of the sea. It has six spiny legs, three on each side, that develop from the fins. These "legs" are not really used to walk but rather to stir up food on the sea floor.

About 3 weeks ago Whee! Mamma's Asleep

While mother hedgehog takes a nap, it's party time for baby! Did you know that their prickly quills are actually specialized hairs that are hollow and stiff? Baby hedgehogs are born with a protective membrane covering their quills, which comes off in a few hours.

About 4 weeks ago Back to the Mother Ship!

This 30 year old Sulcata Giant Tortoise gave birth to a clutch of 45 hatchlings!  It was difficult to get them all together for a family photo.

What's the difference between a Tortoise and a Turtle? Tortoises live on land and have feet, whereas turtles are aquatic and have flippers. Tortoises generally have lifespans comparable with those of human beings, and some live longer than 150 years. In general, the number of concentric rings on the shell gives an approximation of the age, much like tree rings.

About 1 week ago Baby Hedgehog Waves Hello!

Your dose of daily squee. This baby hedgehog can look forward to a lifespan of 4-7 years. Unfortunately, in some areas of the world where hedgehogs were introduced, like New Zealand, they have become major pests destroying native species of insects, lizards and ground nesting birds. But yes, they are cute :)
