Berkeley Lab

Bringing science solutions to the world.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe.

Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

About 13 weeks ago The Obama administration is planning a decade-long scientific effort to examine the workings of the human brain and build a comprehensive map of its activity, seeking to do for the brain what the Human Genome Project did for genetics. Lab Director Paul Alivisatos is among six leading scientists who proposed new approaches for mapping the brain. http://ow.ly/hVZKs

About 11 weeks ago Long predicted atomic collapse state observed in graphene
This is for all the #graphene fans out there! Our scientists have obtained the first experimental observation of a phenomenon that was predicted nearly 70 years ago. It's called "atomic collapse" -- and it holds big implications for the future of graphene-based #electronics . Learn more: http://ow.ly/iA8ew

About 6 weeks ago This Month in Berkeley Lab History
52 years ago this month, Lab scientist Albert Ghiorso did something very few scientists ever get to - he added an element to the periodic table. In this image Ghiorso (second from left) inscribes "Lw" in space 103 of the periodic table as co-discoverers look on. Lawrencium (Lw) was first synthesized February 14, 1961 by a team led by Ghiorso, who was co-discoverer of a record 12 chemical elements on the periodic table.  Read more: http://ow.ly/jRBtw #periodictableofelements

About 10 weeks ago Happy Pi Day!
In honor of the day, check out this 2011 U.S. Department of Energy article, "Supercomputers Crack Sixty-Trillionth Binary Digit of Pi-Squared".  The work was based on a mathematical formula discovered a decade ago in part by the Lab's David H. Bailey! http://ow.ly/iWdIB

About 11 weeks ago Towards Design of a Universal Flu Vaccine
Worldwide, influenza causes substantial deaths but the highly changeable nature of the flu virus complicates the production of an effective vaccine. Researchers working at synchrotron facilities including the Lab's Advanced Light Source have solved the crystal structures of antibodies that protect against broad classes of influenza strains. Greater understanding of these antibody structures may aid in the eventual development of a universal vaccine. http://ow.ly/isGec #fluvaccine   #influenza

About 12 weeks ago Previous studies suggested that Methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases, is removed from the atmosphere through aerobic & anaerobic processes with the help of bacteria & archaea. Recent evidence suggests, however, that methane can be removed through other pathways involving as-yet unidentified microbes.
