Techno-Philosopher

I am Senior Maverick at Wired magazine. I helped launch Wired in 1993, and served as its Executive Editor until January 1999. I am currently editor and publisher of the popular Cool Tools, True Film, and Street Use websites. From 1984-1990 I was publisher and editor of the Whole Earth Review, a journal of unorthodox technical news. I co-founded the ongoing Hackers' Conference, and was involved with the launch of the WELL, a pioneering online service started in 1985. I authored the best-selling "New Rules for the New Economy," and the classic book on decentralized emergent systems, "Out of Control." I co-founded the All Species Inventory, a taxonmic initiative to catalog all the species on Earth. I am also a charter board member of the Long Now Foundation which is building a monumental clock to tick for 10,000 years.

About 12 weeks ago Another video worth watching. It's two quadrocopter drones throwing a stick to each other. Humans (at least me) would have trouble doing this. It shows you how fast these are progressing. In this case the algos for the copters are learning, so that the more they practice the better they get!

About 1 week ago In 10 days I am headed back to the Circle. I go there to see what our future is. I'll be in China for two weeks. May 30, 31 I'll be hiking some parts of the Great Wall that I haven't seen. I could use a hiking partner who speaks better Mandarin than me.

A new term for me. Means using sock puppets on large scale to establish fake identities in order to promote a supposedly "grass roots" movement.

Excerpts:

Operation Earnest voice is built to allow 50 real users to manage 10 fake accounts each. These 500 accounts appear to be from anywhere in the world they user would like, “replete with background , history, supporting details, and cyber presences that are technically, culturally and geographically consistent.” What it does, effectively, is create a network of online personas that, when working in a coordinated fashion, can control the tone and direction of just about any online conversation.

These accounts could have some very useful applications outside of the stated goal; they could be used to help monitor social networking sites, and they would be quite powerful in influencing social movements through hashtags and what’s hot features on twitter and Google+. Also, the personas could quite effecti

About 2 weeks ago This guy leaves the internet for one year. Hoping it would do him good. Now he's back and not so sure his unconnected year was a good idea.

He says: "I'd learned how to make a new style of wrong choices off the internet. I abandoned my positive offline habits, and discovered new offline vices.....So much ink has been spilled deriding the false concept of a "Facebook friend," but I can tell you that a "Facebook friend" is better than nothing."

Good read. More complicated than what I am quoting.

About 4 weeks ago This is the coolest example of the hive mind I've seen in a long while. It reminds me of the first demonstration of crowdsourced behavior I saw in the early 1990s, and now order emerges from chaos. Give it a try!

About 6 weeks ago International Dark Sky Week

In 2001, “The First World Atlas of the Artificial Night Sky Brightness” reported two-thirds of the U.S. population and more than 50% of the European population had already lost the ability to see the Milky Way with the naked eye (http://bit.ly/16BdS69). The report also showed that 63% of the world population and 99% of the population of the European Union and the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) lived in regions where the night sky is brighter than the threshold for light-polluted status set by the International Astronomical Union.

In 1994, an earthquake knocked out the power in Los Angeles. Many residents called local emergency centers reporting a strange “giant, silvery cloud” in the dark sky. That giant, silvery cloud was the Milky Way, which many residents had just seen for the first time.

About 2 weeks ago This strange wild landscape is just a mile or so from the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco. Those Dr. Suess stalks are larger than you, about 3 meters tall. I witnessed them on a birthday hike this weekend. What wonders surround us!
