About 1 week ago This is just astounding:

"If the current laws that govern federal taxes and spending do not change, the budget deficit will shrink this year to $642 billion, CBO estimates, the smallest shortfall since 2008. Relative to the size of the economy, the deficit this year -- at 4.0 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) -- will be less than half as large as the shortfall in 2009, which was 10.1 percent of GDP."

Thanks in large part to higher taxes on the wealthy, which Republicans said would not reduce the deficit, deficit reduction is picking up speed at a pace few could have predicted. We're now looking at over $400 billion in deficit reduction in just one year, and about $800 billion in deficit reduction since President Obama took office.

Let's say this plainly: for those who saw the federal budget deficit as a "problem," it's fair to say this problem has been largely fixed.

And while we're at it, let's also not forget that Repu

About 2 weeks ago There are so many Beltway pundits blaming President Obama for Republican intransigence so often -- for reasons that vary from strange to stupid -- that there must be a label to describe this runaway meme.

Greg Sargent has been using a name that makes a lot of sense: the Green Lantern Theory of Presidential Power. Even if you've never heard of Green Lantern, it's easy enough to understand the concept: Beltway pundits seem to think the president has supernatural "leadership" powers that he can use to bend Congress to his will. Party, ideology, policy, elections, history, legislative procedures -- none of this matters under the Green Lantern Theory of Presidential Power. The pundits believe Obama has this magical ability, and if Congress is failing to enact the White House's agenda, it's necessarily proof that the president is failing to use his mystical powers effectively.

Why anyone in professional political commentary believe this child-like Green Lantern Theory

About 11 weeks ago Honestly, Boehner came across [on Sunday's Meet the Press] as a man who's just terribly confused about the basics of the ongoing debate. Putting aside ideology and preferred policy agendas, the Speaker just doesn't seem to keep up on current events especially well -- he doesn't remember the 2011 spending cuts; he doesn't remember last week's Senate filibuster; he doesn't remember President Obama's offers to cut more spending; he doesn't remember his own op-eds; and he doesn't remember the economic growth that followed tax increases in the 1980s and 1990s.

About 3 weeks ago A confluence of events appears to have created a curious new talking point on the right. With former President George W. Bush's library set to open, and last week's Boston Marathon bombing still very much on the public's mind, Republican pundits see value in trying to tie the two together in the hopes of improving Bush's reputation.

The Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin, for example, published this gem yesterday: "Unlike Obama's tenure, there was no successful attack on the homeland after 9/11."

About 13 weeks ago David Corn: Our book—hailed by the New York Times as "the most comprehensive account of the White House's political machinations"—was the first cut at an important topic: how a president had swindled the nation into war with a deliberate effort to hype the threat. The book is now the basis for an MSNBC documentary of the same name that marks the 10th anniversary of the Iraq war. Hosted by Rachel Maddow, the film premiers Monday night in her usual time slot (9PM ET/PT). But the documentary goes beyond what Isikoff and I covered in Hubris, presenting new scoops and showing that the complete story of the selling of that war has yet to be told.

About 9 weeks ago It's hard to believe, but the economy is actually starting to look pretty good. The latest job numbers were strong; the latest manufacturing figures were very encouraging; the housing sector is looking increasingly strong; Wall Street is up; and the new retail-sales numbers were so good, "it's hard to imagine how the numbers could have been stronger."

All Americans really have to worry about now is their elected lawmakers acting against their interests on purpose.

About 11 weeks ago First, after 20 years of overwhelming bipartisan support, opposition to the Violence Against Women is now the mainstream Republican position. About half the Republicans in the Senate voted against the law, as did more than half the Republicans in the House.

As recently as 2005, there was a Republican majority in the House, for example, and VAWA was reauthorized in a lopsided, near-unanimous vote. Since then, the number of House GOP members opposed to the law has grown from 2 to 138. What was a fringe position in 2005 is now the GOP majority position in 2013.

Second, we're learning something important about House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and the so-called "Hastert Rule." For those who need a refresher, under modern Republican norms, the Speaker only considers legislation that enjoys "majority of the majority" support -- if most GOP House members oppose a measure, it won't even be considered, whether it can pass the chamber or not.

About 2 weeks ago Why did GOP senators put aside common sense and popular will to kil expanded background checks on firearms purchases? According to Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), who co-authored the bipartisan measure, it wasn't just about the gun lobby -- some of his Republican colleagues didn't want to "be seen helping the president."

"In the end it didn't pass because we're so politicized. There were some on my side who did not want to be seen helping the president do something he wanted to get done, just because the president wanted to do it," Toomey admitted on Tuesday in an interview with Digital First Media editors in the offices of the Times Herald newspaper in Norristown, Pa.
