About 6 weeks ago The Moments Between || Lake Wanaka

On the edge of Lake Wanaka, there stands a lone tree that grows just off the rocky shore. Over the years, I’ve seen dozens of phenomenal photographs of this location but now having experienced it in person, even the best photos seem to pale in comparison to actually being there. The quality of color and light when the sun rises here is simply exquisite, and even setting aside all things related to photography, I’m just happy I had the chance to start the day in this beautiful place.

So with that, even though I’m sad to say that another visit to New Zealand is coming to an end today, I’m very happy that Naomi and I were able to explore and photograph a few new and beautiful locations. Thanks again New Zealand. Once again It’s was a pleasure to be here.

About 6 weeks ago The Valley of Fog || Meteora Greece

As the rain clears, thick fog rolls through the valley and past the sandstone spires and monasteries of beautiful Meteora Greece…

This is one of my all time favorite photos and the complete story of how it was captured can be found here: http://bit.ly/Wgpbd4

About 8 weeks ago Rising Tide || New Zealand

As a photographer, there are certain places in the world that are an absolute joy to work with. Here on St. Clair Beach on the South Island of New Zealand, these old pylons create a unique opportunity for many beautiful compositions. On my last visit here back in December of 2012, I was fortunate to catch a series of spectacular sunrises during a powerful incoming swell.

This morning, Naomi and I landed in New Zealand again for our 3rd visit. We’re really looking forward to exploring some new locations as well as revisiting a few of our old favorites, including these awesome pylons on St. Clair Beach. Hopefully the weather gods will smile down on me once again!

About 1 week ago The City Of Lights || Paris

From the top of Montparnasse Tower, the sky above Paris explodes with vivid color and light…

I often say that there are certain places in the world that have the power to take my breath away. On my first visit to Paris last fall, the city exceeded all of my expectations and left me with a strong desire for more. I would even go as far to say that the city of lights could quite possibly be the best city in the world for travel photography. I know that's high praise but from my perspective, with the wealth of possibilities for strong and beautiful compositions and the diversity of subject matter, it could definitely be true.

This was shot in August 2013 from the top of Montparnasse Tower on a very hazy and grey day. With less than favorable conditions, I wasn’t expecting much for sunset but when this sky appeared out of the grey, I was completely caught off guard. Within minutes, the viewing platform was flooded with a mob of excited spectators.

About 5 weeks ago The Heart of Santorini || Oia Greece

When people talk about the Greek Island of Santorini, they often say that it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. In my opinion, all of the positive things people say about this Aegean paradise are one hundred percent true. From the scenery, to the food and wine, to the wonderful attitudes of both the residents and visitors, Oia is simply spectacular from every angle.

Though there are dozens of beautiful vantage points all over town, this is probably one of the most popular and iconic views that can be captured of Oia. It’s also the main viewing area where thousands of people gather every single night for the chance to witness a famous Santorini sunset. It’s a crowded area to say the least and once the sun dips below the horizon, the entire town joyously erupts into cheers and applause.

This spot is beautiful to experience every day but most often the skies around Santorini remain a constant stark blue. If you’re lucky however

About 6 weeks ago Misty Melody || Post-processing Before And After

It’s been a long time since I’ve shared a Post-processing before and after comparison but I think this scene is a great example of how far I like to push the colors and contrast in my RAW files.

Also, while I rarely replace skies in my photography, this was a shot where I felt it to be absolutely necessary. I shot in this location over the course of many days and on a few mornings I captured beautiful fog with clear skies and other times, I had zero fog and epic skies. This resulting image is a blend of 2 different days shooting in nearly the identical location and focal length.

After some small tweaks in Adobe Camera Raw before import, I used hand painted masks in Photoshop to blend the two RAW files together. Once the blending was complete, I gradually built up the color contrast in specific areas until I felt that the light had a nice and even balance. I find that while working with foggy and hazy environments, it’s best to
